Christopher Farr Bauhaus rug: Homage to Gunta Stölzl
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019, the renowned English manufacturer Christopher Farr is presenting exclusive, hand-tufted rugs inspired by the innovative textile designs of Bauhaus icon Gunta Stölzl. This special Bauhaus rug 1 takes us back to the golden 1920s, a time when Stölzl revolutionized the integration of modernity into the art of hand weaving.
As the first female master of the Bauhaus, Gunta Stölzl made a significant contribution to the development and recognition of the art of weaving. Her beginning in 1919 at the Bauhaus in Weimar was marked by creative synergies, especially through her collaboration with the legendary Marcel Breuer. Her stunning textiles that adorned Marcel Breuer furniture are considered classics of modern design.
After various stints, including her role in founding a weaving workshop for Johannes Itten in Zurich, she returned to the Bauhaus in 1925 and became director of the weaving workshop. Despite her departure from the Bauhaus in 1931 and emigration to Switzerland, she left a legacy that marks her as one of the most influential innovators of 20th century textile design.
This special carpet project, realized in close collaboration with Stölzl's daughters, Yael Aloni and Monika Stadler, pays tribute to her pioneering contributions to textile art. Secure a piece of living design history and experience the timeless elegance and creative genius of Gunta Stölzl in your own home.
Hand-tufted wool rugs are not only luxurious and aesthetically pleasing additions to any room, but they are also durable and long-lasting when properly cared for. Here are some tips and advice to ensure your hand-tufted wool rug stays in top shape for a long time:
-
Regular vacuuming: Vacuuming your wool carpet at least once a week will help remove dust, dirt and allergens. When vacuuming, avoid using a rotating brush as it can damage the fibers.
-
Stain removal: You should act quickly in the event of a spill. Dab the stain immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub, as this can make the stain worse. For stubborn stains, a special wool cleaning agent or a mild soap solution may be helpful.
-
Turn the rug: To ensure even wear and tear, you should rotate the rug every few months, especially if it is located in a place that is exposed to a lot of sunlight or foot traffic.
-
Avoid direct sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause the colors of your wool rug to fade. Consider placing the rug so that it is not constantly exposed to sunlight or use curtains or blinds to filter the light.
-
Professional cleaning: Depending on the usage and specific conditions of your home, it may be wise to have your hand-tufted wool carpet professionally cleaned every 1-2 years.
-
Moth Prevention: Wool carpets can attract moths. To prevent this, vacuum regularly under the rug and check it periodically for signs of moth infestation.
-
Storage: If you need to store your rug for a longer period of time, roll it (instead of folding it) and store it in a cool, dry place. Use moth repellent and check the rug regularly.
A hand-tufted wool rug is an investment in beauty and quality. With proper care, it can last for many years, if not decades, while always maintaining an attractive appearance.
