Anatolian kilims are far more than mere textile objects – they are woven memories, personal messages, and expressions of lived culture. For generations, women from nomadic tribes and villages wove their wishes, hopes, and stories into the fabric – freely, intuitively, and full of symbolism.

This kilim was also woven in an Anatolian home – from the wool of their own sheep, shorn, washed, carded, and hand-spun. The yarns were often dyed with natural pigments from madder, weld, walnut, or indigo – but from the 1950s onwards, synthetic dyes increasingly found their way into the villages. The world became faster, more colorful – not every kilim remained purely plant-dyed. Many pieces from the 1960s and 1970s bear the traces of a cultural transition in their tones: between old and new, craft and modernity.

Weaving was a ritual act – accompanied by songs, stories, silence. Often several women sat together at the loom: mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor. Every knot, every line, every symbol carried meaning – protection, fertility, connection, strength. Symbols like the eye (Göz), the cosmic mother (Elibelinde) or the scorpion became carriers of deep messages.

They were used, loved, passed on – and some of them slept for a long time in chests until they one day came back to light.

Today, we clean and restore these pieces with the utmost respect: washed with olive soap, dried in the sun of Antalya, repaired in our Istanbul studio.

Some pieces are with us for only a few months, others accompany us for years – because we rush nothing. Every kilim is restored with time, care, and respect. Some wait for the right restorer, for the summer months to bask in the sunlight – for their silent transformation back into a living work of art.

MATERIAL

Sheep's wool is a natural and very high-quality material. All our carpets are woven from hand-spun sheep's wool yarn, which consists of long fibers and has a very high lanolin (wool grease) content. This makes the wool particularly dirt-resistant, water-repellent, and antibacterial.

Sheep's wool is also a living material that becomes softer and shinier over the years with use and the influence of sun, air, and water. It is a material that ages gracefully, is absolutely environmentally friendly and free of harmful substances, and cleans and regenerates itself.

CARE

With loving treatment and regular care, a Kelim from Wild Heart Free Soul will look like new even after many years of use. Real Kelims thus last for several generations.

Our Kelims don't require much care, but the right kind of care. A Kelim should be vacuumed regularly and carefully or beaten out. Stains can almost always be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Dried food residues can easily be scraped off or brushed out.

A Kelim should not remain wet for a long time, as it can warp. Therefore, we do not recommend washing it yourself.
