Beyza's Note
A sun-kissed kilim from Denizli, whose warm, heart-opening colors and exceptional wool quality touch me deeply.
Faded pink, delicate apricot, honey yellow, and warm earth tones unfold on a light, cream-colored ground. The sun and the passing decades have gently altered the colors. Countless fine shades, known as abrash, give the weave a fascinating depth and vibrancy. Through decades of use, the wonderful, hand-spun sheep's wool has developed an almost silk-like sheen.
Large, interlocking geometric shapes and finely jagged contours form a powerful, rhythmic composition. Within them, we encounter traditional Anatolian symbols that speak of protection, trust, creativity, and connection.
A magnificent, approximately 70-year-old kilim, whose beauty lies not only in its patterns and colors, but also in the traces of time. A textile work of art full of warmth, history, and soul.

This approximately 70-year-old kilim comes from Denizli in southwestern Anatolia, a region with a long tradition of wool processing and weaving.
Woven by hand from wonderful, hand-spun sheep's wool, it showcases the special beauty of traditional flat weaves. The fine irregularities of the yarn give the surface its vibrant texture. Decades of use have given the wool an extraordinary suppleness and an almost silk-like sheen.
Particularly fascinating are the countless color shades that run through the entire weave. This play of colors, known as abrash, is created by differences in the wool yarns and their dyeing. Together with the natural aging and the gentle fading of the colors, it gives the kilim its unmistakable depth and patina.
The language of the motifs
The geometric ornaments of this kilim belong to the rich visual language of Anatolian weaving traditions. Their inherited interpretations reflect human hopes, wishes, and experiences.
Su Yolu, the watercourse, stands for the flow of life and is a reminder of trust, change, flexibility, and devotion. Tarak / Parmak, comb and finger, are associated with creativity and the power of creation, with the ability to give shape to life with one's own hands.
Kurt Ağzı, the wolf's mouth, is associated with protection, vigilance, and intuition. Bukağı, the shackle or bond, symbolizes strong, lasting ties – to ourselves and to the people we love.
The meanings of these motifs are not universally fixed. Their interpretations can vary depending on the region, community, and tradition. They offer us a glimpse into the cultural world from which these textiles emerged.
