Region of Origin

The Barak Turkmens are a nomadic people and were one of the first nomadic clans of Turkish origin. About 100 years ago, a portion of the Barak nomads from the region around Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey, were resettled in the southwest. They settled in the Akdag Mountains above Kas. The women of this clan exclusively wove kilims with special patterns and colors in the years between 1940-1980, after their resettlement, which are very characteristic and found only in this region. Today, they are called "Barak-Kelim" and are a rarity.

Manufacturing Process

Our vintage kilim rugs are handcrafted. The wool yarn used for our vintage rugs is hand-spun and hand-dyed. Woven from the finest, pure hand-spun sheep's wool, which has been hand-dyed in vibrant, cheerful colors. Due to the high lanolin content, the sheep's wool has a particularly beautiful sheen. A sheen that cannot be achieved with industrially produced yarn.

Cleaning and Restoration

Our cleaning process is cyclical and in harmony with nature. We only clean once a year at the beginning of summer. The cleaning of our carpets takes place once a year at the beginning of the summer months. We exclusively use

 water and pure olive soap. Afterwards, we work with the power of the sun to intensify the cleaning process. The strong sun in the summer months of June-September bleaches stubborn stains and discolorations, removes odors, and keeps moths away. Through the power of nature, we can completely do without aggressive and environmentally harmful chemicals.

Subsequently, our kilims are mechanically dusted, stretched into shape, the ends are re-knotted, and holes are re-woven.

Material

Sheep's wool is a natural and very high-quality material. All our carpets are woven from hand-spun sheep's wool yarn, which consists of long hairs and has a very high lanolin (wool grease) content. This makes the wool particularly dirt-resistant, water-repellent and antibacterial.

Sheep's wool is also a living material that becomes softer and shinier with age through use and the influence of sun, air and water. It is a material that ages gracefully, is absolutely environmentally friendly and free of harmful substances, and cleans and regenerates itself.

Care

With loving care and regular maintenance, a Wild Heart Free Soul kilim will still look like new after 20-30 years and can thus be handed down through several generations.

Our kilims do not require a lot of care, but they do require the right care. A kilim should be regularly and carefully vacuumed or beaten out. Stains can always be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Food residues can be simply brushed off or out once dry.

However, a kilim should not remain wet for long, as it can warp. Therefore, we do not recommend washing it yourself. If you feel the need to wash your kilim, please contact us.
