Vintage Kilim Rug Çal 143cm x 103cm
This original vintage kilim was hand-woven in Anatolia in the second half of the 20th century by a nomad woman. It's made of hand spun, naturally dyed sheep wool. Before starting the weaving, the artist was shearing her sheep, cleaning, combing and spinning the wool to have the best yarn for her kilim. After spinning the wool she was dyeing it in a complex process with natural dyes. This whole process could take one year or even longer.
This woven piece of art is one-of-a-kind and was made for self use. Nomads and farmers were using their kilims as rugs on the floor, as tent or wall hangings, as covers or transportation bags. The pattern and symbols on kilims always have special meanings. They are standing for protection, blessings, abundance or the unity of lovers.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
All our vintage kilims and rugs are completely handmade. The sheep's wool yarn is hand-spun and dyed. Due to its high lanolin content, the high-quality wool has a particularly beautiful sheen. A shine that cannot be achieved with industrially produced yarn. After the elaborate production of the yarn, the kilim is hand-woven on a traditional wooden loom. This process usually takes several months, sometimes even over a year.
CLEANING AND RESTORATION
Our cleaning process takes place cyclically, in harmony with nature.
Our carpets are cleaned only once a year at the beginning of summer. For this, we use exclusively water and pure olive soap. Afterwards, we work with the power of the sun to intensify the cleaning process. The strong sun in Anatolia between June and September bleaches out stubborn stains and discolouration, removes odours, is antibacterial and keeps moths and insects away. Thanks to the power of nature, we can completely avoid environmentally harmful chemicals.
Finally, our kilims are mechanically beaten and then sent for restoration. In our atelier in Sultanahmet, each carpet is individually reshaped, the ends are re-knotted using the technique of the Iranian knot, so that the weave does not unravel. Material
Sheep's wool is a natural and very high-quality material. All our carpets are woven from hand-spun sheep's wool yarn, which consists of long fibers and has a very high lanolin (wool grease) content. This makes the wool particularly dirt-resistant, water-repellent, and antibacterial.
Sheep's wool is also a living material that becomes softer and shinier over the years with use and the influence of sun, air, and water. A material that ages beautifully, is absolutely environmentally friendly, free of pollutants, and cleans and regenerates itself.
Care
With loving care and regular maintenance, a Kilim from Wild Heart Free Soul will still look good after 20-30 years, just like on the first day, and can thus last for several generations.
Our kilims do not require a lot of care, but the right kind. A kilim should be regularly and carefully vacuumed or beaten out. Stains can always be easily removed with a slightly damp cloth. Food residues can be scraped off or brushed out when dry.
However, a kilim should not remain wet for a long time, as it can warp. Therefore, we recommend not washing it yourself. If you feel the need to wash your kilim, please contact us.
