Vintage Kilim approx. 223 x 149cm
This original vintage kilim was hand-woven in Anatolia in the second half of the 20th century by a nomad woman. It's made of hand spun, naturally dyed sheep wool. Before starting the weaving, the artist was shearing her sheep, cleaning, combing and spinning the wool to have the best yarn for her kilim. After spinning the wool she was dyeing it in a complex process with natural dyes. This whole process could take one year or even longer.
This woven piece of art is one-of-a-kind and was made for personal use. Nomads and farmers used their kilims as rugs on the floor, as tent or wall hangings, as covers or transportation bags. The pattern and symbols on kilims always have special meanings. They stand for protection, blessings, abundance or the unity of lovers.

PRODUCTION PROCESS
All our vintage kilims and carpets are entirely handmade. The sheep wool yarn is hand-spun and dyed. Due to its high lanolin content, the high-quality wool shines particularly beautifully. A sheen that is not achievable with industrially produced yarn. After the complex production of the yarn, the kilim is hand-woven on a traditional wooden loom. This process often takes several months or even over a year.
CLEANING AND RESTORATION
Our cleaning process takes place cyclically, in harmony with nature.
Our carpets are cleaned only once a year at the beginning of summer. For this, we use only water and pure olive soap. Afterwards, we work with the power of the sun to intensify the cleaning process. The strong sun in Anatolia between June and September bleaches out stubborn stains and discolorations, removes odors, is antibacterial and keeps moths and insects away. Thanks to the power of nature, we can completely avoid environmentally harmful chemicals.
Finally, our kilims are mechanically beaten and then sent to Istanbul. In our atelier in Sultanahmet, each carpet is individually stretched into shape, the ends are re-knotted using the technique of the Iranian knot so that the weave does not come loose. Sheep's wool is a natural and very high-quality material. All our carpets are woven from hand-spun sheep's wool yarn, which consists of long hairs and has a very high lanolin (wool fat) content. This makes the wool particularly dirt-resistant, water-repellent and antibacterial.
Sheep's wool is also a living material, which becomes softer and shinier over the years through use and the influence of sun, air and water. It is a material that ages beautifully, is absolutely environmentally friendly and free of pollutants, and cleans and regenerates itself.

Care
With loving care and regular maintenance, a Wild Heart Free Soul kilim will still look like new after 20-30 years and can therefore be passed down through several generations.

Our kilims do not require a lot of care, but they do require the right kind. A kilim should be regularly and carefully vacuumed or beaten. Stains can always be easily removed with a slightly damp cloth. Food residues can be scraped off or brushed out when dry.
However, a kilim should not remain wet for long, because it can warp. Therefore, we do not recommend washing it yourself. If you feel the need to wash your kilim, please contact us
