Vintage Kilim Kütahya 225 x 142cm
This original vintage kilim was hand-woven in Anatolia in the second half of the 20th century by a nomad woman. It's made of hand spun, naturally dyed sheep wool. Before starting the weaving, the artist was sheering her sheep, cleaning, combing and spinning the wool to have the best yarn for her kilim. After spinning the wool she was dying it in a complex process with natural dyes. This whole process could take one year or even longer.
This woven piece of art is one-of-a-kind and was made for self use. Nomads and farmers were using their kilims as rugs on the floor, as tent or wall hangings, as covers or transportation bags. The pattern and symbols on kilims always have special meanings. They are standing for protection, blessings, abundance or the unity of lovers.

Anatolian kilims are far more than mere textile objects – they are woven memories, personal messages, and an expression of lived culture. For generations, women from nomadic tribes and villages wove their wishes, hopes, and stories into the fabric – freely, intuitively, and full of symbolism.
This kilim was also woven in an Anatolian home – from the wool of their own sheep, shorn, washed, carded, and hand-spun. The yarns were often dyed with natural pigments from madder, weld, walnut, or indigo – but from the 1950s onwards, synthetic dyes increasingly found their way into the villages. The world became faster, more colorful – not every kilim remained purely plant-dyed. Many pieces from the 1960s and 1970s bear in their tones the traces of a cultural transition: between old and new, craftsmanship and modernity.
Weaving was a ritual act – accompanied by songs, stories, silence. Often, several women sat together at the loom: mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor. Every knot, every line, every symbol carried meaning – protection, fertility, connection, strength. Symbols like the eye (Göz), the cosmic mother (Elibelinde), or the scorpion became carriers of profound messages.
They were used, loved, passed on – and some of them slept for a long time in chests until they one day saw the light again.
Today, we clean and restore these pieces with the utmost respect: washed with olive soap, dried in the Antalya sun, repaired in our Istanbul studio.
Some pieces are with us for only a few months, others accompany us for years – because we don't rush anything. Every kilim is restored with time, care, and respect. Some wait for the right restorer, for the summer months to bathe in the sunlight – for their silent transformation back into a living work of art.

Sheep's wool is a natural and very high-quality material. All our carpets are woven from hand-spun sheep's wool yarn, which consists of long hairs and has a very high lanolin (wool fat) content. This makes the wool particularly dirt-resistant, water-repellent and antibacterial.
Sheep's wool is also a living material that becomes softer and shinier with age due to use and the influence of sun, air and water. A material that ages beautifully, is absolutely environmentally friendly and free of harmful substances, and cleans and regenerates itself.
Care
With loving care and regular maintenance, a kilim from Wild Heart Free Soul will still look like new after 20-30 years and can thus be passed down through several generations.
Our kilims do not require a lot of care, but the right kind. A kilim should be vacuumed regularly and gently or beaten out. Stains can always be easily cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Food residues can be simply scraped off or brushed out in a dry state.
However, a kilim should not remain wet for long, as it can warp. Therefore, we do not recommend washing it yourself. If you feel the need to wash your kilim, please contact us.
